High Performance Leader

Brendan Joyce is a High-Performance leader, with a career spanning four decades in elite sport in Australia and internationally. 

Born in Melbourne, Brendan Joyce grew up playing both Basketball and Australian Rules Football. Going on to become a top National Basketball League player for thirteen years and earning a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation from Victoria University, Melbourne. Before developing a reputation as a dynamic leader, with the ability to take on diverse roles to support the development of athletes across a variety of critical stages in their career.

  • Regarded as one of Australia’s premier basketball coaches, Joyce has led teams to multiple playoff and Championship games. Selected highlights include coaching the Kaohsiung Aquas to the T1league Championship in Taiwan, the first time an Australian has done so at the senior level in Asia. Securing the Wollongong Hawks an elusive NBL Championship and leading the Gold Blaze to multiple playoff series as a new club.

    Since 2004 Joyce has been part of multiple Olympic and World Cup teams. Including Assistant Coach for the Australian Olympic Men’s teams in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. As Head of Basketball at the Centre of Excellence of the Australian Women’s program 2013-2016 Joyce oversaw the development of players and coaches from junior to senior levels. During this period the U17s won Gold and the U19s Bronze at the Fiba World Cup. Simultaneously Joyce was Head Coach of the Australian Opals, leading the team to secure a Bronze Medal at the 2014 Fiba World Cup, and 5th place at the 2016 Olympics.

Playing Career

Joyce began his senior NBL playing career with the Nunawading Spectres in the NBL inaugural year 1979. He went on to play 289 games across thirteen seasons for the Nunawading Spectres, Westside Melbourne Saints, and Brisbane Bullets. Joyce was renowned for tough defensive play and ability to penetrate and create opportunities for his team mates and was one of the all time league leaders in assists for many years.
